Parent and baby yoga

Baby yoga with Nik VoglerParent and baby yoga classes will help promote bonding with their carer and baby’s development in a fun, relaxed environment. They will also aid mum’s postnatal recovery, and are a great opportunity to meet other parents.

The classes include yoga for adults as well as babies, and are suitable for mums after their six week check, but dads, grandparents, childminders etc are also welcome to attend. The classes are suitable from the six week check until just before crawling, usually around eight to nine months, but you know your child best!

Yoga can help strengthen your back, core and pelvic floor, relieving sore or tense muscles, and you will also learn breathing and relaxation techniques. No prior experience of yoga is necessary.

The classes are held at La Vida yoga studio in Market Street, Ulverston, on Tuesdays from 12.30pm to 2pm. You need to book online by following the link to the La Vida website using the button below. Classes are £8.

Parent and baby yoga FAQs

What to expect in class

Please feel free to arrive anytime from 11.50am onwards. We begin informally at 12 by enjoying a cuppa, biscuits and chat. Once everyone has arrived and is settled, we begin in circle with brief introductions. This gives me a chance to check in with how everyone is feeling, physically and emotionally, and allows me to tailor the class accordingly. It is also a chance for you to share some supportive words with your fellow parents.

Arriving at the class

Parking is available nearby in the town centre car parks. The nearest bus stop is a five minute walk to Victoria Road, and the studio is a ten minute walk from Ulverston Train Station.

Please note the studio is at the top of a flight of stairs, and there are also a few steps outside to access the entrance. If your baby is in a pram, and you wish to avoid the stairs, Rioja wine bar just round the corner on New Market Street is happy for you to leave prams in there, or you may wish to leave the pram at the foot of the stairs inside the entrance. Alternatively, you could bring your baby upstairs using a sling, car seat or detachable carry cot. Please call me as you arrive on 07779 728861 if you need any assistance accessing the studio – I am happy to help carry your baby especially if you are still recovering from a c-section.

What should we wear?

Adults  and babies should wear comfortable clothes which allow freedom of movement. Feet need to be bare (adult and baby) during class. Layers are good – you may both become warm during the more active part of the class but will cool down quickly during relaxation.

What should we bring?

Please bring your own yoga mat, or hire one from the studio for £1. It’s also a good idea to bring a blanket and favourite toy for your baby and water for yourself, especially if you are breastfeeding. If you don’t have time to eat before class please feel free to bring a snack. If your baby suffers from reflux and you use a wedge at home, it’s a good idea to bring that too.

Can I feed or change my baby during class?
Of course, please feel free to attend to the needs of your baby at all times during class. If baby is bored lying or sitting down, feel free to get up and wander around at any point!

Does it matter if my baby sleeps through the class?
No. If baby sleeps all through class, just enjoy a yoga practice for you, and try a few moves together when you get home.
